What I think popular culture is and what it means to me

To me, Popular Culture is shared information about art (it can be music or picture art), art history, entertainment, what people believe, and what people value.  This information is shared throughout all cultures within a large society.
Popular Culture means that we have freedom to tell the word what we think about entertainers, politicians, and world views without reprise.
I feel popular culture is relevant to me and my career because  I work with a much younger generation of employees.  It is important for me to be able to keep up with the latest fads, newest ideas in both the entertainment and political views of today’s youth. I work in a team setting, so it’s important for me to have this knowledge base so that I am respected and better able to communicate with my peers.
I consider the actor Michael J. Fox and his debut in the movie: Back to the Future, to be an example of pop culture artifact. I chose this because I can relate to Mr. Fox in two ways:  I am close to his age, and I have a father who is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. I often refer to the movie “Back to the Future”, as a metaphor of today’s fast moving changes in life, towns, cities, and people.

  1. Deb, I think your comments about staying up with the latest political views and ideas are dead on the mark.

I am also a Michael J. Fox fan! I have admired his career, while maintaining the "average person" persona and the way he handled his disease.

  2. Deb, i think your chosen artifact is a great one. Relating back to the movie and your comment about how fast things change is just so true. I grew up in Canton, OH and I am just amazed how, in the last 5 years since I have moved away, how fast things have changed. We are talking about housing complexes where farm lands was and small shopping malls and gas stations being built where farm lands was. All of this has taken place in the last 5 years and I am just amazed. Great artifact!

  3. I really like the artifact that you choose to represent you. I like how you choose someone that is similiar to you so that you can show us kind of a background of your family. It is also very true how fast things change. I was living in Columbus going to school at Columbus State and working at a distribution center in August. By the end of August I had moved back to Marysville started doing all my classes online at Franklin and working at Honda of America. Its crazy how fast things can change!

  4. You make a great point that popular culture is important because of the younger generation that you work with. I have the same thing in my office, and if you don't keep up (especially with technology) the younger generation will run right past you. I also love the artifact that you choose, it's one of my favorite movies. Michael J. Fox is also an amazingly talented actor.
